Ohio DOT Sets the TikTok Pace

The Ohio Department of Transportation has long been a national leader in producing high-quality, informative customer-focused videos. Among its many programs is the award-winning weekly program, The Loop, featuring ODOT communications pros Erin McBride and Matt Bruning, which has garnered more than 64,000 YouTube views. The content is high quality, consistent and – I think I mentioned this – informative.

But ODOT’s communications team has discovered that TikTok provides a way to reach an entirely new and different audience with its video content that is far beyond the standard YouTube channel.

Thanks to intern AJ Overstreet, who was familiar with the TikTok platform, ODOT discovered that it could repurpose video it was already producing and, in turn, grow the engagement with their content.

Ohio’s ‘Don’t Be That Driver’ Key Message for 2016 Work Zone Awareness Campaign

National Work Zone Awareness week runs April 11-15 and its theme this year is “Don’t Be That Driver.”

The Ohio Department of Transportation, the host of this year’s national kick-off event near Toledo, has developed a number of creative and thought-provoking public service announcements that use humor to make the point that driving safely through work zones is the responsibility of all drivers.

More information on the National Work Zone Awareness week and the coalition of supporting organizations is available from American Traffic Safety Services Association, including details on a new 2016 initiative that encourages people and organizations to display orange to support the work zone safety theme.

Ohio DOT wraps record-busting winter in 50 seconds

Transportation communicators are in the information business. It remains a challenge to think of new ways to creatively sharing critical information. Therefore, a major hat-tip to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

ODOT turned to YouTube to share their annual snow and ice wrap up statistics.

According to the video, ODOT used more than 1 million tons of salt, compiled 1.2 million hours worked, drove 14 million miles and spent $113 million on snow and ice fighting. Somehow reading the list of ODOT’s accomplishments is not quite as powerful as seeing it on video.

Not every state transportation department or transit agency has access to video. But we all have the ability to think beyond the news release.
